Field Shelters

If you are looking to buy a Field Shelter of just would like more information, below is a buyer’s guide to Field Shelters we can manufacture for you.

A field shelter is an ideal way to provide a low cost shelter to give protection to your horse. But they are not just for horses they are perfect for all types of ponies, horses, donkeys, alpacas or Lama’s just to name a few. They are also an excellent choice as an open barn and can be used for storing hay, animal feed or farm storage.

We also sell a wide range of options, dividing walls, timber gates, metal gates, slip rails, additional front panels. If you need your field shelter to be mobile, we also sell timber skids, steel skids, wheeled trailer units. All made to your exact building.

When you have a half-ton of horse leaning against the walls of your building, or your building is standing out in the middle of a field with no protection from the elements, a flimsy construction with low quality materials is the last thing you want.

A high quality, low cost wood, gives you great value

We build our field shelters from first-grade Bulgarian spruce - of course, other wood options are available, but we find that nothing else matches it for value or price; other woods in the same price range (e.g. the Scandinavian spruce the many of our competitors use) are a lot weaker, while stronger timbers (e.g. oak) are a lot more expensive.

Sturdy construction from a reliable style

We clad our field shelters in an overlapping 'Country Cut' style, with a 20mm overlap between boards - this is a lot more sturdy than the 5mm overlap found in Tongue-and-Groove (T&G) clad field shelters, especially considering that many improperly treated T&G can shrink over time, resulting in much less than 5mm connection between boards.

A word about tanalising.

Tanalising is a process intended to extend the lifespan of low quality wood, by trying to give it properties that high quality wood would naturally have. This is not as effective as using high quality wood. It can can even have disadvantages such as promoting shrinkage and knot loss. Therefore, we choose to use better quality wood (our first-grade Bulgarian spruce), rather than tanalising inferior wood.

We believe in giving you the choice or offering you our advice to help you decide what to buy. For example, we can manufacture our field shelters with a steel frame with either timber or in metal cladding. You can choose steel box profile sheets in a range of colours or traditional corrugated steel sheets. We also do composite cladding. You can even mix and match combining metal cladding with timber cladding or timber frame with metal cladding.

But it’s not just the walls where we give you the choice. We have many options for the roof too including Onduline, Coroline, GRP roof lights, Felt tiles, we can even can offer a thatched roof, just to give you a few examples. The options are endless. Afterall it’s your building!

Heat insulation

Wood is a natural insulator, so will keep your buildings warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer, in comparison, an uninsulated metal building will leak heat in the winter, and will turn into an oven during the summer - just think about standing under a hot tin roof.

  • Double fieldshelter
  • Veterinary field shelter with opening panels
Sound insulation

Wood also offers some sound insulation, which may not seem like a huge benefit, but some animals can become disturbed or upset by the loudness of hail or rain on a metal roof. During the summer, a horse will seek out shade provided by the field shelter, this leads to less overheating, heat rashes, and sunburn on animals, especially those with pink skin and white markings. In the winter, they provide a warm shelter out of the wind and rain, lowering the chance of rain scald, mud fever, and other conditions linked to the cold and wet. So, our Field Shelters not only keep your horse (or other animals) healthy, they will keep the vet away and your bills down.
